SCIENCE, SINGING, AND SUMMER FUN
Science Got a Little Messy (In the Best Way)
Science came to life this month thanks to a special visit from Dr. Hazari, a retired chemistry professor from the University of Tennessee whose famous science demonstrations have been delighting audiences for decades. Students watched bubbling potions, colorful chemical reactions, and "magic tricks" that were actually science in action, proving that learning can be just as exciting as it is educational.
The visit was especially meaningful because it brought a bit of Emerald history full circle. More than 30 years ago, Emerald volunteers first took youth to see Dr. Hazari's science show at UT. This summer, he brought that same sense of wonder directly to our youth, inspiring a whole new generation to stay curious and keep asking questions.
A Good Book Can Take You Anywhere
Reading took center stage during OWL Day as the Governor's Early Literacy Foundation joined us to share stories and encourage a love of books. Youth gathered together to hear engaging read-alouds before each child received free books to take home and enjoy with their families.
Summer reading helps students continue learning long after the school year ends, and we're grateful for partners like the Governor's Early Literacy Foundation who help make literacy accessible, exciting, and something every child can enjoy.
Making the Most of Summer
Every week has brought something new for young people participating in Summer Fun Days. Whether they were playing games, creating crafts, exploring new activities, or spending time with friends, students had countless opportunities to build relationships and make lasting memories.
Alongside the fun, children also spent time growing in their faith through Bible lessons, scripture memorization, worship, and conversations that encouraged them to continue learning about God throughout the summer. These moments help create a space where young people can grow both personally and spiritually.
A Wild Day at the Zoo
One of the highlights of the summer was Variety Zoo Day, where students spent the day exploring Zoo Knoxville, learning about animals from around the world, and enjoying time together outside.
Field trips like these give young people opportunities to experience new places, ask questions, and simply enjoy being kids. It's always exciting to watch students discover something new—whether it's a favorite animal, an interesting fact, or just a memorable day spent with friends.
Growing Through Worship Arts Intensive
This summer, students participating in Worship Arts Intensive spent time strengthening both their musical abilities and their confidence as worship leaders. Whether learning to lead vocally, improve as instrumentalists, or explore music production, students were challenged to continue growing in their gifts.
Beyond developing technical skills, the intensive encouraged students to use music as a way to serve others and express their faith.

SPORTS MINISTRY SPOTLIGHT
Summer sports have been in full swing, and athletes across Emerald Youth have been learning new skills, building confidence, and developing teamwork through camps and training opportunities.
The annual Elston Turner Basketball Camp is happening this week at Austin-East High School, bringing young athletes together for instruction, encouragement, and mentorship led by Austin-East legend and Minnesota Timberwolves coach Elston Turner.

Youth also had the opportunity this month to participate in TKJ Foundation’s annual football camp, where former Tennessee Vol Todd Kelly Jr. helped them sharpen fundamentals, stay active, and learn from experienced coaches and community leaders.
Performance Training has continued helping athletes prepare for upcoming seasons by focusing on strength, speed, agility, and overall athletic development. Through every camp and clinic, young people are learning that sports can be a powerful tool for building confidence, discipline, and healthy habits.

HIGH SCHOOL EXPERIENCES
This summer, high school students explored a variety of career, leadership, and personal development experiences through our Calling & Career Ministry.
Students visited local businesses and organizations, participated in hands-on workshops, and connected with professionals working in a number of different industries.
These experiences were made possible through collaborations with incredible community partners, including Empower School at Valley Dream Farm, Home Federal Bank, Pellissippi State Community College, Prisma Health Blount Memorial Hospital, the University of Tennessee Tombras School of Advertising and Public Relations, UT Medical, and others.
Workshops covered financial literacy, mental health, community engagement, career exploration, leadership development and much more.
By exposing young people to new opportunities and real-world experiences, they expand their perspectives and begin imagining the many possibilities for their futures.
BACK TO THE BOOKS AT EMERALD ACADEMY
Welcome Back!
On Monday, July 27, the new school year kicked off at Emerald Academy with its “first day high-five line” and plenty of smiles all around!
Classrooms are once again filled with excitement as scholars reconnect with friends, meet new teachers, and begin another year of learning and growth.
We're excited to see what this school year holds and can't wait to watch K-8 grade scholars from across the city continue to develop.
