Celebrating Christmas and a Legacy Honoree

Two recent events brought together neighbors and friends from throughout Knoxville.

More than 150 families representing over 400 children participated in Emerald Youth’s annual Christmas Store in early December. The store gives parents of children connected to Emerald the opportunity to purchase new gifts at a deeply discounted rate.

Dozens of volunteers came together following the Thanksgiving holiday to organize and wrap the hundreds of gifts that were generously donated by individuals, churches and businesses. The Christmas Store was once again held as a “drive thru” event, allowing families to order their gifts online ahead of time and pick them up while staying warm in their vehicles.

On November 16, more than 900 guests attended the Emerald Youth Foundation Legacy Dinner, which honored community leader Alvin Nance and celebrated Emerald’s 30th anniversary serving young people and their families in Knoxville’s city neighborhoods.

The annual event – presented by the Charlie and Moll Anderson Family Foundation, SafeSplash Swim School, Faith Promise Church and Jama and Mike Campbell – was held at the Knoxville Convention Center.

For decades, Nance has supported Emerald Youth and many other organizations in Knoxville including Project GRAD, Knoxville Area Urban League, Knoxville Habitat for Humanity and Dogwood Arts. He currently serves as chair of the new Knoxville-Knox County Sports Authority Board.

Perhaps his most impactful contribution to Emerald has been his advocacy and service as a board member for Emerald Charter Schools, guiding Emerald Academy to consistent academic improvement. Nance’s leadership has afforded more city children the opportunity to receive a quality education.

Planning has already started for next year’s Legacy Dinner — stay tuned for more!
